Hatao Ya Patao, or HYP as the cool kids call it, is a matchmaking party game for Bollywood fanatics and other despos! Players take turns as Matchmakers and pitch iconic characters from Indian cinema to the Eligible bachelor/bachelorette as they rebut other players and try to win!

How to Play?

To play this game, you will need a few desperate laundas (guys) and a few desperate laundiyas (gals). You will also need some smooth matchmaking skills. Make sure all players are using WiFi and are present in the same room or on a video conference call on another device. The point is, you need to be able to see and hear each other while using the app.

When you start the game, one player is chosen to be the ‘Eligible bachelor/bachelorette’ at the beginning of a round. The remaining players are assigned as ‘Matchmakers’.

As a matchmaker, you are assigned a random character card based on the preferences of the eligible bachelor bachelorette. This preference, along with the player name and profile picture, is set by all players in the profile section page prior to starting a new game. Let’s say you are selected as the eligible bachelor/bachelorette. If you are into women, your matchmakers will get female character cards. If you’re into men, your matchmakers will get male character cards. If you’re into both, your matchmakers will get a mix of both cards.

This card received by each matchmaker contains the biodata of a popular Bollywood character, specifically the character’s picture, name, and a list of two green and red flags.

Green flags are the positive qualities of a character whereas red flags are the negative qualities. Your goal as a matchmaker is to convince the eligible bachelor/bachelorette, within two minutes, why your character is the perfect match for them using your silver tongue to hype up their green flags and down play their red flags. Matchmakers take turns one by one to pitch their cards to the eligible bachelor/bachelorette.

The eligible bachelor/bachelorette listens to all the matchmakers’ pitches and then shortlists matchmakers to engage in a rebuttal, where matchmakers must highlight the red flags of other matchmakers and bring them down in the eyes of the eligible bachelor/bachelorette. When the rebuttal is over, the eligible bachelor/bachelorette must make the decision to either ‘Hatao’ (reject) the character or ‘Patao’ (accept) the character. The matchmaker whose character gets patao’d gets one point and with this the round is over. The next round starts with a new eligible bachelor/bachelorette, new matchmakers, and the game repeats.

The game ends when the winning score is reached by a player. The duration of the game is entirely up to you. A larger game score means a longer game and a smaller game score means a shorter game. Typically a game score of three is advised. A rebuttal time of 2-3 minutes is recommended for a shortlist of four players. Once a player reaches a game winning score, the game ends and they are crowned as the matchmaking champion!

Now its time to grab some despos and play aunty to their love life!
